Recurrent Training Requirements

Remember all EJet500 training is FAA approved.
Please contact us if FAA authorization letters are needed by your insurance provider.

As of October 31, 2012, Eclipse 500 pilots whether operating “single-pilot” or “dual-pilot,” are required to have annual PIC proficiency checks (14 CFR 61.58). This checkride must be administered by an examiner approved by the FAA Administrator. That includes, FAA Ops Inspectors, DPEs, TPEs (simulator check airmen) or PPEs. All EJet500 instructors are PPEs.

This checkride is in addition to the Annual Recurrent Training mandated by the FAA in the approved EA500 Airplane Flight Manual (AFM). However, the cost of the checkride is included in the fee for Annual Recurrent Training.

Pilot Experience Questionnaire (PEQ):

A PEQ will be completed by the pilot prior to attending recurrent training. The completion of the PEQ provides important information regarding pilot currency, proficiency, and aircraft use during the previous 6-12 month interval. Information collected from the PEQ is used by the training instructor to better address a pilot’s level of proficiency in certain areas of operations.

Aircraft Systems, Procedures, and Performance Training (Pre-Study):

All pilots will be required, before starting recurrent training, to sign a self-certification stating that they have reviewed:
• AFM Section 2 – Eclipse 500 Limitations
• AFM Section 3 and QRH Section 5 – Eclipse 500 Emergency Procedures
• AFM Section 5 and QRH Section 4 – Eclipse 500 Performance
• AFM Section 7 – Eclipse 500 Aircraft Systems
as necessary in preparation for recurrent training. Recommended pre-study time is 16 hours.

Typical Course Organization:

Total time for the course is typically two training days. This timeframe does not include time lost due to weather, mechanical or pilot learning-deficiency delays. The typical recurrent course will include two classroom sessions and two 1.5-hour flights with appropriate pre- and post-flight briefings. However, since weather and other scheduling issues may interrupt a typical training sequence, all classroom training may be conducted on a single day, and all flight training may be conducted on a single day, so long as all training content is satisfactorily completed.

Aircraft Systems Test:

At the beginning of the recurrent training program, the instructor will administer a 50-question test covering Eclipse 500 systems, limitations, and AFM procedures to validate the student’s pre-study. A passing score of 80% is required prior to commencing recurrent flight training. No further written testing will be required if a score of at least 80% is achieved on this test.

Ground Training:

The Overview, Written Test, and Systems Training modules must be completed prior to commencing flight training. The other ground training modules may be completed in any sequence during the recurrent training course. The ground training portion is typically expected to be completed in approximately 6.5 hours (7.0 hours if a BFR endorsement is requested).

Flight Training:

The flight training phase is event-based and programmed for a minimum of 3 flight hours. In-flight scenario-based training is difficult or impossible in a high-performance aircraft in IFR operations within a real-time ATC system. However, a flight planning scenario exercise will be conducted in conjunction with flight training. The aircraft portion of the recurrent training program may be completed in an aircraft provided by the pilot or provided by EJet500 (if available) and includes approximately: One hour of training in basic airplane control as a refresher on selected maneuvers; One hour of training in approaches, takeoffs, and landings; and One hour of training in precision and non-precision instrument approaches as well as selected abnormal operations.

Course Completion Standards:

The EJet500 Recurrent Training Program is designed to address two major objectives: (1) Assess the pilot’s skills in performing a safe flight, and (2) Review and reinforce the higher order skills needed to operate the Eclipse 500 with a high degree of safety and utility in foreseeable operating environments. Course completion is based on completion of a Biennial Flight Review and/or Instrument Proficiency Check, rather than on the requirements of FAR 61.58. No 61.58 endorsements will be issued by EJet500. Therefore, course completion standards for recurrent training will be based on the standards appropriate for the level of pilot certificate held by the pilot. Holders of an ATP certificate must perform flight maneuvers to the standards contained in the Airline Transport Pilot and Aircraft Type Rating Practical Test Standard, FAA-S-8081-5, as amended. Holders of a private or commercial certificate must perform flight maneuvers to the standards contained in the Instrument Rating Practical Test Standards, FAA-8081-4 as amended. EJet500 instructors will document pilot performance during recurrent training in the pilot flight training records.
EJet500 defines levels of performance as follows:

  1. SATISFACTORY (S): At the completion of the maneuver, customers meet the appropriate PTS standards. The pilot will identify and correct errors and deviations in an expeditious manner. NOTE: This is the minimum standard needed to successfully complete recurrent training.
  2. INCOMPLETE (I): The pilot did not successfully complete performance of the maneuver due to time limitations, execution below appropriate standards, or unsafe actions. At the discretion of the instructor, and time permitting, maneuvers may be retrained and re attempted to achieve satisfactory performance.

Train to Proficiency:

Should standards not be met by the completion of the standard recurrent training course, the instructor will document incomplete performance for the appropriate tasks. Additional training will then be recommended. Instructors will not endorse the completion of recurrent training, a BFR, or an Instrument Proficiency Check until the appropriate standards are met.
